Meta's open-source AI models SAM 3 and DINOv3 are powering SYNAPS-I, a flagship project under the US Department of Energy's Genesis Mission. Led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory alongside Argonne, Brookhaven, Oak Ridge and SLAC, the initiative uses the two models to segment scientific imaging data from X-ray and neutron facilities in real time.
DOE light and neutron sources now generate tens of petabytes of data a year, and manual analysis can no longer keep pace. The SYNAPS-I team fine-tuned SAM 3 and DINOv3 on scientific imaging data, then deployed them across 300 A100 GPUs at supercomputing facilities including NERSC. A fully segmented 3D volume now reaches the scientist at the beamline in around 15 minutes.
The Genesis Mission, launched by the White House in late 2025 and led by DOE, aims to accelerate scientific discovery using AI, with SYNAPS-I involving 60 researchers across five national labs.
