About
Amazon Web Services is the cloud computing division of Amazon.com, launched in 2006 and run from Seattle by CEO Matt Garman. It rents computing, storage, databases and networking on demand and sells AI services on top: Amazon Bedrock for foundation models and agents, SageMaker for building models, Amazon Quick for workplace AI and its own Trainium and Inferentia chips. Banks and insurers use it for core modernisation, data and AI; HSBC built its Wealth and Personal Banking cloud-first platform on AWS, and Moody's, Danske Bank and Pennymac signed new agreements in 2026. AWS segment sales were US$42.2bn in the second quarter of 2026.
How they use AI
AWS sells AI at each layer of the stack. Trainium and Inferentia chips and GPU instances supply compute; Amazon Bedrock offers a choice of foundation models with governance controls and is used by hundreds of thousands of customers; Bedrock AgentCore provides the building blocks to deploy and run agents, now including payments, web search and Harness for agent infrastructure. Amazon Quick and AWS Continuum apply agents to office work and to finding and fixing code vulnerabilities.
