OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT for Teachers to a further 55 US school districts across 20 states, adding more than 100,000 educators and staff to the programme.

The expansion takes OpenAI's total reach to more than 100 K-12 organisations across 30 states, covering over 300,000 educators and staff who receive free access and training. The new cohort includes a fifth of America's 20 largest public school districts.

Alongside the rollout, OpenAI has signed a data privacy agreement spanning 16 states, letting participating districts check the tool against their own student data rules through a single shared process instead of drawing up separate contracts with each one. California is covered separately.

He breaks down credential starvation, session risk accumulation, and why classifier-based tools keep failing inconsistently on identical actions, pointing to a named frontier lab’s own zero trust paper as an example of the industry misjudging what actually works. OpenAI said the tool remains restricted to administrators, faculty and educators, and will stay free for verified US K-12 educators until June 2028. Data submitted through a ChatGPT for Teachers workspace is not used to train OpenAI's models by default, and workspaces include role-based controls designed to support schools' compliance with FERPA, the US student privacy law.

The company also pointed to usage data suggesting the tool is being used mainly to cut administrative workload, with educators sending over 1.9 million time-saving messages between January and mid-July, covering tasks such as report cards, lesson planning and substitute materials.

Leah Belsky, OpenAI's vice president of education, said the aim was to give teachers "time, training, and a community to learn from one another."
