Milvus 3.0 was announced as a lake-native open-source vector database with production indexing over object-storage datasets and richer ranking, aggregation, sparse and multimodal search, Zilliz said on 16 July 2026.
Vector databases are moving closer to data lakes so embeddings stay beside object storage rather than in a separate silo. Buyers still need latency, consistency and licence clarity between open-source and managed clouds.
Milvus remains the directory brand face for the LF AI & Data open-source project; Zilliz is the commercial creator and Cloud operator and is not added as a separate directory row this wave. Zilliz Cloud incorporates 3.0 as managed Vector Lakebase.
Infrastructure buyers should demand reproducible ANN benchmarks on their embeddings — before treating any lake-native release as a completed vector-search strategy.
