xAI has launched Imagine Image 2.0 as the new Quality Mode on Grok's image generation tools, now generally available on grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android apps, the company announced on 7 August 2026.
The model is built for iterative, real-world creative work rather than one-shot generation. It includes a "magic wand" tool for editing a targeted region while leaving the rest of an image untouched, segmentation for selecting precise areas, background removal with transparent export, and multi-reference editing that accepts up to five input images in a single generation. A smart resize feature lets users recompose a single image across multiple aspect ratios.
xAI said Image 2.0 ranks second in the world on both the Image Edit Arena and Text-to-Image Arena leaderboards as of 7 August 2026, behind OpenAI's gpt-image-2 in both categories. The leaderboard entry achieving that ranking is listed as "grok-imagine-image-2 (low)," a lower-compute variant of the model, rather than the "quality" variant being launched today, which ranks lower on both boards.
The release also introduces a set of templates covering common workflows such as product photography, professional headshots, icon creation and game assets, alongside a feature for generating consistent characters, locations and props across a series of separately generated images while holding a single visual style. API access to Image 2.0 is not yet available, with xAI saying it is "coming soon."
