Google UK has expanded its Be Internet Legends program to include artificial intelligence education, launching a new "Understanding AI" assembly that reached over 22,000 students across 152 British schools this week.
In a blog post on October 21, Google UK & Ireland Managing Director Debbie Weinstein stated that the initiative aims to prepare young people for an AI-driven future by teaching them about artificial intelligence in an accessible and engaging way.
"AI has the unique potential to create new opportunities for everyone, drive economic growth, and advance breakthroughs in science that can change and save lives," Weinstein stated, emphasising the importance of early AI education.
The new assembly programme helps children identify AI in their daily lives, from home voice assistants to traffic management systems, while teaching critical thinking skills about AI-generated information. A key focus is helping students understand AI's limitations and appropriate use cases, including the importance of checking age ratings for AI-powered services.
Developed in collaboration with AI researchers, online safety specialists, and educators, the assembly's content was refined through pilot programmes in eight schools to ensure age-appropriate and engaging delivery. The expansion builds upon Be Internet Legends' successful track record, which has reached over 9 million children in the UK and 100 million globally since its 2018 launch.
The programme emphasises that AI is a tool that can complement human abilities and creativity, not replace them. It integrates with Be Internet Legends' existing "Alert" pillar, which teaches children to be mindful of their online surroundings and potential risks.
The assembly explains what AI is and how it works in simple terms that children can easily understand. It helps them identify AI in their daily routines, encourages critical thinking about AI-generated information, and teaches them to understand its limitations.
