Two days ago I sat down to build a summer schedule of webinars and interviews. I'm typing this forty-eight hours later with thirteen speakers confirmed, and a lot of the calendar still open, because this is genuinely a call for speakers and not just a victory lap. No AI was harmed in the process, unless you count a bit of Claude here and there to polish the language and lazily edit. I'm a LinkedIn jezebel, by which I mean I live on the thing, and I have 25,000-odd connections spanning finance, telecoms and tech. Most of them have been remarkably gracious about a flesh and bones stranger turning up in their inbox with a polite, slightly copy-pasted enquiry, and if you'd rather I never do that to you, save me the trouble and just pick a slot yourself. A few have not been gracious, which is fair enough, and I've apologised to all of them. Some of the replies have been genuinely funny, intentionally and otherwise. Asking someone to hand over years of hard-won professional expertise for nothing is a big ask. We had thirty-four webinar slots across August. Two are gone because I'm doing my best Eddie Murphy impression and daddy day care awaits. AI for security and security for AI threw up more than enough problems before the summer even started. Now we're living in a post-Mythos world, where guardrails do remarkably little and a critical zero-day can apparently be conjured up in seconds. Meanwhile, over in AI governance, the dust has finally settled on the EU AI Act (probably; no further changes expected, though I've said that before). Deepfakes and synthetic identity remain the awkward middle child of both conversations: technically a security problem, practically a governance one, and increasingly nobody's clearly assigned job. Meta rather helpfully illustrated the point for us this month, shipping a tool that let anyone tag a public Instagram account and generate photorealistic images of that person, opted in by default, pulled four days later once the backlash landed. Four days is not a long time to most of us. It is apparently plenty of time to generate a decent stack of synthetic identities and see which verification systems wave them through, which is a sentence I did not expect to be writing about a feature that shipped from the same company that also does dancing llamas. Ownership is still a live question too. Security, IT, legal and comms all have a claim on it, and the honest answer is usually "nobody" until the first incident forces the issue. And then there's the other side of the ledger, the bit where governments do the surveilling rather than the tech companies. Chat Control 1.0 crawled through the European Parliament this month not on a clean vote for the substance of the thing but on a procedural technicality, an absolute majority that couldn't quite be found to reject it, so by default it passed and now runs until April 2028. The encryption carve-out being waved about as a concession is, by most informed accounts, fairly cosmetic, and the Council is expected to knock it back anyway. Meanwhile the EU's own Digital Identity Wallet, due to consolidate identity, health, financial and signature data into a single credential held by 27 member states via 27 different contractors, is being described by at least one cyber threat intelligence researcher I read this week as a centralised honey pot rather than the privacy win it's being sold as. Make of that what you will. Europe seems fairly determined to have both conversations at once this year: being surveilled by American platforms, and being surveilled by its own institutions, and I'm not convinced either side has noticed the other is happening.
