Anthropic has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian government to collaborate on AI safety, establishing joint evaluation frameworks, economic data sharing, and enterprise-focused deployment aligned with Australia’s National AI Plan.
The agreement centers on cooperation with Australia’s AI Safety Institute and is supported by partnerships with the Australian National University, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and Curtin University, alongside AUD$3 million in Claude API credits. The company also confirmed plans to establish a Sydney office as part of its regional expansion.
The primary lens of the agreement is AI safety as an operational requirement for enterprise adoption. Anthropic will provide early access to models, share technical findings on system capabilities and risks, and participate in joint safety and security evaluations. This structured collaboration is designed to give government and industry stakeholders an independent view of frontier AI systems while informing deployment standards across regulated and high-impact sectors.
A central enterprise component is the integration of Anthropic’s Economic Index data into national analysis. This dataset will be used to track how AI is being adopted across the economy, with a focus on productivity impact, task distribution, and workforce implications. Initial sectors include natural resources, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services—areas where AI deployment intersects with large-scale operations and regulatory oversight. The data is intended to support workforce planning, skills development, and policy decisions tied to AI-driven transformation.
The partnership also reflects growing demand for structured AI adoption across enterprises. Anthropic cited existing usage patterns in Australia, where Claude is already being applied to high-skill tasks such as management, business operations, and technical workflows. The inclusion of academic and research institutions provides a testing ground for applied use cases, but the broader emphasis is on scaling reliable, governed AI systems into production environments.
In parallel, Anthropic is exploring investment in data center infrastructure and energy capacity in Australia, aligning with government expectations for sovereign AI capability and resilient compute supply. The planned Sydney office further anchors this strategy, signaling a shift toward localized operations, enterprise support, and regional talent development.
Anthropic has also launched a startup API credit program in Australia, targeting companies building in areas such as climate modelling, materials science, and diagnostics. While positioned as early-stage support, it extends the company’s enterprise footprint by seeding future commercial use cases on its platform.
Taken together, the agreement positions AI safety as a prerequisite for enterprise-scale adoption, linking model evaluation, economic measurement, and local infrastructure to support sustained deployment.
