Anthropic has made a consumer-facing version of its most powerful AI model publicly available, less than two months after warning that the technology posed serious risks.
Claude Fable 5 is a version of Claude Mythos, the AI system that drew significant concern from technology, finance, and government leaders when Anthropic released it privately in April for preview and testing.
Anthropic said Fable would be released with safeguards and user limitations in place, while acknowledging that "releasing a model this capable comes with risks." The company said Fable's capabilities exceed those of any model it has previously made generally available.
Both Fable and Mythos are described as essentially the same underlying model, differentiated by safeguards and access levels. Both are capable of operating unattended on human commands for longer periods than any previous Claude model, Anthropic said.
The release comes as Anthropic approaches a public listing, with its private valuation nearing $1 trillion.
