Airbyte has joined the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, which hosts open protocols for agentic systems including MCP, AGENTS.md and goose, the company said on 20 January 2026.

In a post announcing the move, CEO and co-founder Michel Tricot argued that the main barrier to production AI agents is data access: business data sits across SaaS apps, databases, warehouses and lakes with no unified, governed access layer.

He said agents need to read data from operational systems such as CRMs, support tools, ERPs, HR platforms and code repositories, reason over it and write back to it, and that doing this reliably at production scale remains the hardest part of building useful agents.

Airbyte, which started as an open-source data movement project, pointed to its work on agent connectors, which expose typed, documented interfaces to operational systems, and said the foundation's open, community-driven model matches how it has always operated.

The blog post quotes Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin: "AI is shifting from conversational systems to autonomous agents that work together."
