Adyen announced a major upgrade to Authenticate, the Uplift module that uses machine learning to route each transaction to the highest-performing authentication technology and optimise data shared with issuers, the company said on 22 September 2026 from Amsterdam.

Three ML decisions per transaction decide whether authentication is needed, which method will perform best, and which data to share for the highest issuer-approval chance. Methods selectable in one integration include 3DS, Google Secure Payment Authentication, Mastercard Payment Passkeys, Visa Payment Passkeys and data-only flows, with partnership with Google, Mastercard and Visa called out. Adyen said being both authentication provider and acquirer lets models train on final authorisation outcomes across trillions of interactions, not authentication results alone, and that Authenticate works with Adyen Protect for risk-based challenges.

Named customer lifts included Too Good To Go at 11% payment conversion since using Authenticate, and Sander Kole, fintech engineering director at Just Eat Takeaway.com, citing a 12% increase in payment conversion on eligible traffic with a single integration and no ongoing rule maintenance. Conversion figures are company and customer claims and have not been independently verified by AI-360.
