Sumsub announced on 13 February 2024 a Deepfake Detection feature integrated into its Video Identification solution, calling the capability an industry first. The company said the launch comes as AI-powered fraud increasingly targets businesses rather than only individual users during remote onboarding.

Sumsub cited its 2023 Identity Fraud Report, which it said showed a tenfold increase in deepfakes detected globally across industries from 2022 to 2023, with crypto and fintech jointly accounting for 96% of cases and fintech deepfake incidents up 700% year on year. Those figures are vendor report claims.

The company said the feature operates in real time during video interviews, complementing deepfake detection already embedded in its Liveness product. Unlike methods focused on static images or recorded video, Sumsub said the new solution runs while a live video identification session is under way. It noted that video ID is mandatory in jurisdictions including Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Estonia.

Chief product officer Andrew Novoselsky and head of AI and machine learning Pavel Goldman-Kalaydin commented in the announcement on securing live video onboarding against deepfakes as client demand for video interviews rises. The announcement did not publish independent accuracy benchmarks, false-positive rates or name launch customers for the video-ID deepfake module.
