OpenAI announced data residency availability in Japan, India, Singapore and South Korea for ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu and the API Platform, enabling organisations operating in these countries to meet local data sovereignty requirements when using OpenAI products and building AI solutions. Data residency builds on OpenAI's existing enterprise-grade data privacy, security and compliance features supporting hundreds of organisations across Asia.
Eligible API customers and new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers can choose to have customer content stored at rest in supported countries. New ChatGPT workspaces can be set up with data residency in supported countries, allowing customer content storage at rest in the region including users' conversations with ChatGPT and custom GPTs in Enterprise or Edu workspaces, encompassing user prompts, uploaded files and content across text, vision and image modalities.
For the API Platform, eligible customers can enable data residency by creating new Projects in the API Platform dashboard and selecting the relevant country, with data storage occurring in the selected region. The feature supports organisations partnering with OpenAI across Asia including Kakao, SoftBank, Grab, Singapore Airlines and numerous other enterprises spanning startups to large enterprises and academic institutions.
OpenAI's enterprise-grade data privacy, security and compliance features include advanced encryption techniques using AES-256 for data at rest and TLS 1.2+ for data in transit between customers and OpenAI, and OpenAI and service providers, safeguarding data confidentiality and integrity during storage and transmission across networks. By default, OpenAI's models are not trained using data from ChatGPT business plans or the API, unless customers explicitly opt in to share data.
Comprehensive data protection practices support compliance with GDPR, CCPA and other privacy laws while adhering to CSA STAR and SOC 2 Type 2 standards. OpenAI offers a comprehensive Data Processing Addendum clarifying roles and responsibilities under GDPR and other privacy regulations, helping organisations meet compliance obligations.
For the API Platform and ChatGPT business products, data remains confidential, secure and entirely owned by customers. Data residency further enhances data control for organisations operating in Japan, India, Singapore and South Korea; while maintaining highest standards of security, privacy and compliance.
OpenAI's Asian data residency expansion addresses critical compliance barriers preventing enterprise AI adoption in regulated markets. Organisations can accelerate AI transformation initiatives while satisfying local data governance requirements through regional infrastructure deployment. The feature supports competitive positioning against local AI providers emphasising data sovereignty capabilities. Enterprise customers benefit from enhanced data control while accessing OpenAI's advanced AI capabilities across multiple Asian economies representing significant market opportunities.
