Google Research announced the creation of the Zebrafish Activity Prediction Benchmark (ZAPBench) on April 24, 2025, in collaboration with Harvard University and HHMI Janelia following more than a decade of neural connection research across various organisms. The dataset and benchmark helps researchers more accurately model brain activity in larval zebrafish as a step toward understanding more complex brains including humans.

ZAPBench development utilised Google's 4D recording of the larval zebrafish brain, capturing activity of 70,000 neurons responding to different virtual reality stimuli including changing light and water currents. The research aims to enable AI prediction of brain activity similar to how language models predict next words in sentences, with ultimate goals of demystifying fundamental human behaviour and neurological issues underlying human brain disease.

The benchmark represents progress toward AI-powered neuroscientist tools for predicting human brain activity through smaller organism brain modelling. Google Research positions the work as advancing neuroscience understanding by creating predictive models for neural activity patterns in response to environmental stimuli.

The zebrafish brain activity prediction capability demonstrates potential applications for understanding complex neural processes and behaviours across species. The collaborative research approach with leading academic institutions establishes a foundation for broader neuroscience advancement through AI-powered brain modelling techniques.

The ZAPBench dataset provides researchers with standardised tools for brain activity modelling research, potentially accelerating neuroscience discovery through shared benchmarking capabilities. The 4D recording technology and virtual reality stimulus integration demonstrate advanced research methodologies applicable to broader neuroscience investigations. Collaboration with Harvard University and HHMI Janelia expands research validation and establishes academic partnerships for continued neuroscience advancement.

Google Research's decade-long investment in neural connection research positions the company as a leader in computational neuroscience applications. The progression from zebrafish to human brain understanding represents a pathway toward medical and therapeutic applications addressing neurological diseases. The benchmark framework enables broader research community participation in brain activity prediction development, potentially accelerating breakthrough discoveries in neuroscience and related medical fields.
