Aleph Alpha raised Series B funding of more than US$500 million, the company said on 6 November 2023. The consortium was led by Ipai, Bosch Ventures and Schwarz Group, with HPE, SAP and Burda Principal Investments among new investors.
Proceeds were earmarked for foundation-model research, productisation for business-critical environments and commercialisation across regulated European buyers. Then-CEO Jonas Andrulis emphasised sovereignty and on-premises or hybrid flexibility.
The Heidelberg company sells specialised large language models and deployment stacks for data-sensitive industries rather than consumer chat products. A later September 2026 definitive combination with Cohere is pending regulatory approvals and is tracked separately.
Public-sector and regulated buyers should ask how models are deployed on European cloud or on-prem, what explainability tooling covers, and how sovereignty claims map to actual data residency.
