# Microsoft adds Cosmos DB to Fabric for AI applications

[Microsoft](https://azure.microsoft.com/?ref=ai-360.online) has announced a preview of Cosmos DB in [Microsoft](https://www.ai-360.online/microsoft/) Fabric, extending Fabric Databases to the semi-structured data that AI agents increasingly depend on, [Microsoft said on 19 May 2025](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/powering-the-next-ai-frontier-with-microsoft-fabric-and-the-azure-data-portfolio/?ref=ai-360.online).

Fabric Databases launched six months earlier with SQL databases. Cosmos DB in Fabric adds support for semi-structured data such as text, documents, emails and graphs. Microsoft said [OpenAI](https://www.ai-360.online/openai/) uses Azure Cosmos DB to support ChatGPT's 500 million weekly users.

Microsoft also announced a digital twin builder experience and new ways to use Copilot to chat with data in Fabric. Across its wider data portfolio, it announced SQL Server 2025, PostgreSQL support in VS Code with GitHub Copilot, AI Foundry integration with Azure Cosmos DB and Azure [Databricks](https://www.ai-360.online/databricks/), and [SAP](https://www.ai-360.online/sap/) integration with Azure Databricks.

Microsoft said Fabric is used by more than 21,000 customers, including over 70% of the Fortune 500.

The announcements were made at Microsoft Build 2025.
