- Description: Microsoft's analysis of a tampered Cursor Marketplace extension shows why familiar branding is not a substitute for publisher verification and endpoint controls.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence [has analysed a malicious copy](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/blog/2026/10/30/inside-malicious-claude-code-branded-cursor-extension-persistent-ssh-backdoor/?ref=ai-360.online) of a Claude Code-branded extension that appeared in the Cursor extension marketplace on 29 October. Cursor reported that versions 2.1.312 and 2.1.313 were available for several hours. Microsoft said the packages were not distributed through its Visual Studio Marketplace or Anthropic's npm package, and that Anthropic's systems were not compromised.

According to Microsoft's technical analysis, injected JavaScript attempted to collect host details, add an attacker-controlled SSH key, enable SSH, establish reverse forwarding and configure persistence. Successful remote access depended on local privileges and configuration, but artefacts could remain even when a tunnel failed. That distinction matters: removing or updating the extension may not remove keys, scripts or startup entries written elsewhere on the device.

The incident is an AI-era supply-chain story rather than evidence that the underlying model was compromised. Attackers exploited trust in a recognisable developer brand and a fast-moving extension ecosystem. Enterprises using AI coding tools should treat marketplace provenance, publisher allow-lists, installation delays, endpoint telemetry and credential rotation as one control set, not separate hygiene tasks.
