INTERPOL has [launched a public campaign](https://www.interpol.int/en/News-and-Events/News/2026/INTERPOL-launches-public-awareness-campaign-highlighting-risk-of-AI-deepfake-scams?ref=ai-360.online) warning that deepfake-enabled scams are moving beyond public figures and increasingly targeting private citizens. The 19 October initiative covers investment fraud, impersonation, romance scams, sextortion and synthetic media used to request money or sensitive information.

The campaign’s most useful contribution is behavioural rather than technical. INTERPOL advises people to pause when contacted unexpectedly, verify the requester through a known channel and treat urgency, secrecy and unusual payment methods as warning signs. It suggests family safe words for suspicious calls. For businesses, the recommendations include mandatory training and multi-step verification for financial transactions or data transfers, with face-to-face confirmation for large sums.

That approach reflects a difficult reality for banks and employers: visual or audio anomalies are becoming a weaker control as generation quality improves. Fraud controls must therefore authenticate the transaction context, not just the face or voice presenting it. Payment teams should look for changes in beneficiary, device, channel and behavioural patterns, while giving staff an easy way to stop and escalate. Consumer messaging also needs to be practical. Telling people that deepfakes exist is less useful than giving them a repeatable verification routine at the moment pressure is applied.
